In response to the recent riots and Islamophobic violence, HDN hosted a virtual roundtable for our members to offer support, discuss immediate reactions, and explore ways the sector can help prevent similar events in the future. Due to strong interest, we adjusted the format to include three speakers followed by a discussion.

This briefing summarises the insights shared by Amanda Garrard, Chief Executive at Berneslai Homes, Anthony Duerden, Chief Executive at Calico Group, and Baljit Basra, Partner at Devonshires. They discussed their organisations’ responses to the riots and the legal options available to landlords.

At HDN, we believe housing organisations should do more than just condemn recent violence. This violence, driven by hatred, Islamophobia, and misinformation, goes against the values of a fair, just and inclusive society. We urge the housing sector to actively support those affected, ensure their services continue, and help heal the damage caused. It’s crucial for boards and executive teams to lead these efforts as part of their commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

    Actions for housing organisations:

    • Establish clear strategies for addressing potential future unrest.
    • Strengthen initiatives aimed at fostering community cohesion.
    • Offer reassurance and support to their staff, with particular attention to BME employees.
    • Reassess security protocols for protecting vulnerable tenants and properties.
    • Unite as a sector in lobbying the government for coordinated efforts on community cohesion and anti-racism measures.
